The meeting of unique project’s organizers and participants was held on April 14th

The meeting of the participants and organizers of the “Arctic Necropolis” project, that is being implemented by the Scientific Center for Arctic Studies with the support of the government of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District of Russia, was held on Skype.

The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Department of External Relations of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District and regional operators of the project (in St. Petersburg it is the Northern Convoys International Centre).

The participants discussed issues of further cooperation at the first stage of the project - filling the “Arctic Necropolis” electronic database. The current aim is to fill in the information relating to people who died and ships that sunk in the sea area of the Russian Arctic during the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). It is planned to include into the database information about the sunk military and merchant ships, as well as aircrafts and submarines, of the USSR and allies, their passengers and crew members and their burial places. For this, volunteers and researchers under the guidance of regional operators, will collect data from books and archives (in Russia and abroad), museum funds, Internet etc. The data will then be analyzed and entered into the “Arctic Necropolis” database; the plans are also to involve foreign specialists in filling in the data. Completion of database is planned by 2024.
